Having survived the Civil War, major fires, an earthquake and hurricanes – Charleston still exudes elegance, charm and grace. We tour the city with its cobblestone streets, historic homes and restored buildings, and then stop at Fort Sumter where, in 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired. This afternoon amidst the moss draped oaks of Boone Hall – we explore one of America's oldest working plantations with its remarkably preserved slave cabins. Tonight's dinner features a local specialty – the famous She-crab soup! Meals BD

This morning, during a relaxing horse-drawn carriage ride, we absorb the timeless charm of Charleston's historic district. After lunch we depart Charleston, and travel south through South Carolina's Low Country to Savannah, Georgia. Overnighting at the Holiday Inn Express in Savannah's National Historic Landmark District, we enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening to wander the tree-filled streets, the City Market, and the River Street shops. Meals BL
Day 5, Wednesday April 26 (Savannah to Jekyll Island)
Today begins with a guided tour of Savannah's historic district along the cobblestoned Factor Walk and River Street, where old cotton warehouses have been converted into trendy shops, taverns and restaurants. Visiting the Andrew Low Home and Gardens, we learn about Juliette Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts. This afternoon, travelling south along the vast marshlands, winding rivers and beautiful beaches of the unspoiled Georgia coast, we reach the elegant Jekyll Island Club Hotel, our home for two nights, grandly situated on Jekyll Island in the midst of the fabled Golden Isles. Meals BD
Day 6, Thursday April 27 (Jekyll Island, local touring)
Jekyll Island, where their grand cottages still stand, was once the winter retreat of prominent gilded age families. Our morning tram tour explores this historic waterfront landmark where the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts and J P Morgan once vacationed. This afternoon we visit nearby St Simons Island to see its striking lighthouse, visit its Museum of Coastal History, and wander among its quaint shops and restaurants. We return to Jekyll Island for an evening at leisure. Meals B
Day 7, Friday April 28 (Jekyll Island-St Augustine-Jacksonville)
Departing Jekyll Island we travel south, enter Florida, and arrive in the United States' oldest city, St Augustine, first settled in 1565. Our guided trolley tour highlights the Old Spanish Quarter, the historic Bayfront, the Old Town which dates to 1572, and the Plaza de la Constitucion with its shops and restaurants. Following our tour, we'll have leisure time for lunch, further sightseeing, and perhaps a visit to the Fountain of Youth Park, a site reputedly first explored by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513. This afternoon we continue to Jacksonville, and arrive at our city-centre home for two nights, the Omni Jacksonville Hotel. BD
Day 8, Saturday April 29 (Jacksonville, local touring)
Jacksonville, a deep-water port and the commercial centre of northern Florida, is located at the mouth of the St Johns River where it meets the Atlantic. During our morning city tour we travel along the banks of the St John River, seeing the Jaguar Stadium, Veterans Memorial Wall, St John's Cathedral, Friendship Fountain, and Treaty Oak. Continuing along the river we view the historic homes of the picturesque Riverside/Avondale community. Following a lunch stop at the Riverside Arts Market, we enjoy an excursion to beautiful Amelia Island to visit the quaint town of Fernandina.
