Bella Coola Circle

We travel the scenic Fraser Canyon to Williams Lake, cross the vast Chilcotin, and descend the Big Hill, for a two night visit to Bella Coola. We depart Bella Coola by BC Ferries Discovery Coast sailing, through the Inside Passage to Port Hardy, and stop for three nights in Port McNeill. From Port McNeill we make excursions to Alert Bay and Sointula, before enjoying a leisurely drive down the North Island Highway for our final night in Campbell River.

Day 1, Friday June 18
(home to Williams Lake)

Following our at-home-pickup-service, we make a morning stop in Yale, and continue through a series of seven highway tunnels, as we travel the scenic Fraser and Thompson River canyons through Boston Bar, Lytton, and Spences Bridge to our lunch stop near Cache Creek. This afternoon we enter Cariboo country, pause at 100 Mile House, and then continue to our overnight stop in Williams Lake at the Overlander Hotel.

Day 2, Saturday June 19
(Williams Lake to Bella Coola)

This morning we head west from Williams Lake, cross the Fraser River, and enter the sprawling ranchlands of BC's Chilcotin country. As we continue westward with a morning stop in Alexis Creek, and lunch in Tatla Lake, the snowcapped Coast Mountains loom mightily in the distance! Following an afternoon stop in Anahim Lake we reach these magnificent mountains, and descend the famous Bella Coola hill via Heckman Pass, into Hagensborg and on to Bella Coola. We check in for two nights at the Bella Coola Valley Inn and the Cumbrian Inn. This evening is at leisure.

Day 3, Sunday June 20

This morning with our resident guide, we learn about the local history and visit points of interest, including the waterfront docks, the historic Augsborg Church, and the excellent Bella Coola Valley Museum. The afternoon there’s leisure time for shopping and browsing – Kopas Store has everything!

Day 4, Monday June 21
(Bella Coola-Discovery Coast Ferry-Port McNeill)

This morning at 8am we depart Bella Coola via BC Ferries Discovery Coast route, aboard the Queen of Chilliwack, and begin a relaxing cruise along British Columbia’s rugged mid-coast to Port Hardy on Northern Vancouver Island. The Queen of Chilliwack features reclining seats, a gift shop, cafeteria, and licensed lounge. We reach Port Hardy at 9pm, and transfer by our motorcoach to nearby Port McNeill, for a three night stay at the Black Bear Resort, which overlooks Broughton Strait, near the centre of the community.

Day 5, Tuesday June 22
(Port McNeill, day trip to Alert Bay)

Each morning our hotel includes a deluxe continental breakfast. This morning, we sail from Port McNeill by BC Ferries across Broughton Strait to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island. Our first stop is the U'mista Cultural Centre where we learn about the native culture, view striking totem poles (including the world's tallest), and enjoy a traditional meal and a performance by native dancers. From U'mista, accompanied by a local guide, we tour the island and return to the village to browse the shops, before our sailing back to Port McNeill. This evening we enjoy dinner in Port McNeill and an evening at leisure.

Day 6, Wednesday June 23
(Port McNeill, day trip to Sointula)

This morning we visit the impressive Port McNeill Museum, and then sail aboard BC Ferries across Broughton Strait to Sointula on Malcolm Island. Joined by our local guide, we tour the island settled in the early 1900's by Finnish pioneers. Our tour includes views of farms and fields, panoramic ocean vistas, and time in Sointula for lunch and visits to the museum, the arts & crafts gallery, and the co-op store. This afternoon we sail back to Port McNeill, and continue to picturesque Telegraph Cove for dinner and an evening stroll on the oceanfront boardwalk, before returning to our hotel.

Day 7, Thursday June 24
(Port McNeill to Campbell River)

Departing Port McNeill this morning, our first stop is the nearby Henschel Fine Arts Gallery, which presents the works of artist Gordon Henschel, renowned for his paintings of the natural beauty of Vancouver Island. From the gallery we travel southward, along the North Island Highway to our lunch stop in Sayward, before continuing to Campbell River. Our home tonight is the Coast Discovery Inn, ideally situated in the heart of the downtown shops and waterfront. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure followed by this evening's farewell dinner.

Day 8, Friday June 25
(Campbell River to home)

Departing Campbell River this morning, we travel south along the scenic old Island Highway, through Qualicum Beach and Parksville, to our morning stop at Coombs Country Market. We continue to Nanaimo, and board our mid-day sailing aboard BC Ferries to Horseshoe Bay and home.
